If something happened, or keeps happening in your mind or your body, and talking about it hasn’t been enough to make it feel resolved, EMDR might be a good fit.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Here’s what that actually means in plain language:

When we experience difficult memories or emotions, they can get “stuck” in our brain—replaying over and over, keeping us anxious or in pain. EMDR helps your brain process these stuck memories by using bilateral stimulation (usually eye movements) while you focus on the difficult memory or feeling. This process helps your brain naturally move the memory from an emotional, reactive state to a more neutral, processed state. It’s like your brain’s natural healing ability gets a gentle nudge to do what it’s designed to do.

The result? Memories lose their emotional charge. You remember what happened, but it no longer controls your life. You can think about it without the overwhelming feelings, and you’re free to move forward.

What to Expect: What Happens in an EMDR Session

Everyone moves through EMDR at their own pace. Some people notice a shift after just a few sessions. Others, especially with longer-standing patterns, work with Stefani over more time. There’s no fixed finish line, just progress you can feel.

In each session, you’ll briefly hold a memory or feeling in mind while Stefani guides you through a set pattern of eye movements or taps. This helps your brain reprocess the memory so it feels less raw and no longer controls how you react.

You stay in control the whole time. Stefani walks you through what to expect before you start, and you can pause or stop whenever you need to.

Session Length

Most therapy sessions are approximately 50–60 minutes and can typically be billed to insurance. For some trauma-focused work, including EMDR, a longer session may be helpful; extended sessions can be arranged when clinically appropriate, although the additional time may not be covered by insurance and may require an out-of-pocket fee. Stefani will talk with you beforehand about whether a longer session could be beneficial and what the cost would be.

Course of Treatment

The number of sessions varies depending on your specific situation. Some people see significant progress in 6-12 sessions, while others may benefit from ongoing therapy. During your free consultation, we’ll discuss what to expect for your particular needs.

*Note: Results vary by individual. This is not a guarantee of outcomes, but rather a reflection of typical treatment timelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Insurance Cover EMDR Therapy?

Yes! Stefani accepts insurance from multiple providers including Aetna, Colorado Access, Health First Colorado, Medicaid, Rocky Mountain Health Plans, and UnitedHealthcare. We’re happy to verify your coverage and discuss any out-of-pocket costs during your consultation.

Is therapy available virtually through telehealth?

Absolutely. We offer both in-person sessions at our Lafayette office and secure online sessions. You can choose whichever format feels most comfortable for you.

Do I have to talk about everything that happened to me in detail?

No. This is one of the things people are relieved to learn about EMDR. Unlike some other approaches, you don’t need to describe every detail out loud. You’ll hold the memory briefly in mind while Stefani guides the process, which means less retelling and reliving.

Is everything confidential?

Yes. All therapy is confidential and protected by law. The only exceptions are situations involving immediate danger to yourself or others, or if we’re required to report by law. We’ll discuss confidentiality in detail during your first session.

How is EMDR different from regular talk therapy?

Talk therapy focuses on discussing and understanding your experiences. EMDR adds a structured process that helps your brain reprocess a memory so it carries less emotional weight, often alongside regular conversation. Approaches such as EMDR can help address the emotional, physical, and automatic responses that may remain even when you logically know that you are safe.

How do I know if EMDR is right for me?

If a memory, feeling, or pattern still feels stuck no matter how much you’ve talked about it, EMDR is worth exploring. Book a session and Stefani can help you figure out if it’s a good fit.
